I even have a violin. Obviously, I am not a virtuoso - that is so true. But I am into philosophy of music, and to me, that is what really matters.
When you listen to something - it can be birds singing, leaves rustling; you hear some noises. In the nature, if you lend an ear, you'll notice that they are perfectly in order. You don't feel anything abnormal. That's because music history developed upon the human ear, what was appealing to an ear over centuries evolved into what we call music today.
That is the reason we know seven modes. The most known is Ionian, major tone. For instance, Locrian mode is not feasible to the human ear, it disappeared through something similar to natural selection of music and time. Music is nature. Years after, these harmonies were documented under the name of "music theory". Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven didn't follow these rules, they looked at the nature. They composed what would be appealing to compose, that's why they shaped music into an art from natural harmonied noises. People documented their works later on.
When you listen to a music, it is bunch of notes in order. You hear D4, proceeding with a note that is higher in frequency. It might be something E? Higher? F? So, the story goes on. Once you have a prototype of the formula you hear, you can play it in anywhere. Play the melody on harp, violin, harmonica, saxophone; it's you that decide. They are some vehicles, notebooks, compilers for music.
Until now, I have taught music theory to ten of my friends. I even wrote a handwritten booklet for a person I love. Yet, I don't have a music of my own. The tragedy is similar to the "centipede" problem. While you ponder about which leg to step with, every other bug has already flown away.
Music theory is not a bunch of knowledge sent from heaven. Music is an observer of human history from the beginning of the creation. First times, there were percussions, wind instruments. Since the beginning of creation, music was not solely an art, but was also a science derived from nature.
Musicians founded a relationship between the notes kept the audience focused to their music. For instance, we might not be able to explain it with the music theory. But our ears know that there is something "strange", something "unexpected", something "absurd" is happening when F and G is played with C#.
One of the first impulses we get from the outer world is heart beats of our mother when we were fetus :) The birds harmonize together. The leaves harmonize with the wind. They all happen in harmony. This harmony in nature, what our ears are used to listen since the day we were a zygote, what is the tendency of the ears are documentated in the name of music theory.
All in all, this is not a memorized knowledge. It is documentation of human history and science.

There is no certain knowledge for it. Triads are documentated but there are power chords (5), there are suspended chords (sus4, sus2), there are chords with four notes (7th). Build with any interval!
Here is the most generous trick in music: take the seven notes of one major scale, change nothing, and just start from a different note. You get a completely different mood. These are the modes · seven moods hiding inside every key you find on this site.
Happy, bright, home. Most pop and folk lives here. "Let It Be" is pure Ionian comfort.
Start from the 2nd note. It is minor, but with one raised note that adds a jazzy, hopeful shimmer. Miles Davis built "So What" on it; "Scarborough Fair" and Santana's "Oye Como Va" breathe it.
Start from the 3rd note and the very first step is a half step · instantly dark, instantly Spanish. Flamenco lives here, and metal guitarists love it for riffs that feel dangerous.
Start from the 4th note. One raised note makes everything float, like a film about flying. The Simpsons theme is the textbook Lydian melody.
Start from the 5th note. It is major, but the softened 7th makes it bluesy and easy-going. "Sweet Home Alabama" and The Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" ride on it.
Start from the 6th note. This is the sad one, the emotional one. "Losing My Religion" stays in it from the first bar to the last.
Start from the 7th note and even the home chord is unstable (diminished). Music history almost never uses it · which tells you something: our ears vote, and Locrian keeps losing the election. It survives as spice, not as a home.
Practical use: find your key on the detector page, then click through the seven modes and listen to how the same notes change costume. Improvise in Dorian one day, Mixolydian the next · same fingers, new feelings.
One of my biggest joys is listening through my playlists and harmonizing together with random songs. But to join a song, you first have to know where it lives. This site exists because of that habit · here is the exact method, with a real example.
Don't try to hear everything. Catch three or four notes from the intro or the main riff and find them on the piano or the fretboard. Hum along if it helps; your voice is a slower but honest instrument.
Feed those notes to the detector. Three notes usually leave you with a handful of possible keys. That's not failure · that's the shortlist.
Real example: "Sails of Charon" by Scorpions. The intro gave me two possible readings · C D E F# G A B, or C# D E F# G A B. One note apart. Then the song continued with a C natural, and option one won: the G major family, played from B. B Phrygian. One note decided everything.
The key's family and its mode are different questions. The family tells you which notes are legal; the home note tells you where phrases rest. Listen for the note the song keeps landing on · that's your root. Start and end your lines there and you will sound like you belong.
After a few weeks this stops being steps and becomes a reflex. The tool is training wheels · good ones. Use it until your ears don't need it.
Pop music has a public secret: an enormous part of it is built on one progression · I–V–vi–IV. In C major that is C → G → Am → F. The comedy group Axis of Awesome once played dozens of hits over this single loop, and the joke lands because it is true.
It tells a complete emotional story in four bars: home (I), tension (V), sadness (vi), comfort (IV), and back home. Human ears never get tired of that round trip.
I–vi–IV–V · the 50s doo-wop progression. "Stand By Me" made it immortal; every slow dance of that decade leaned on it.
vi–IV–I–V · the same four chords starting from the sad one. Instant melancholy; half of the 2010s radio pop starts here.
ii–V–I · jazz's heartbeat. "Autumn Leaves" is practically a ii–V–I étude. Learn to hear this one and jazz standards open like doors.
I–IV–V · the 12-bar blues skeleton, the grandfather of rock and roll.
i–VII–VI–V · the Andalusian cadence, ancient and dramatic. "Hit the Road Jack" walks down it the whole song.
Find your key on the detector, open the progressions page, and tap any of these · the site translates the numerals into real chords for your key instantly. Play the loop, then improvise over it using the scale notes. Congratulations: you are now the rhythm section and the soloist.
Every scale this site shows you has seven notes. Five of them are always safe; two of them are opinionated. The pentatonic trick is simply this: remove the opinionated ones.
In a major scale, drop the 4th and the 7th degree. In C major that means dropping F and B. What remains, C D E G A, is the major pentatonic: five notes with no half-step friction against any chord of the key. There is nothing left that can clash, which is why beginners sound instantly better inside it.
The 4th and the 7th are the two notes that sit a half step away from chord tones. They are wonderful notes, but they demand resolution: play them and your ear expects you to move somewhere. Remove them and every note you play is already home. That is the whole magic, no talent required.
The riff of "My Girl", the melody of "Amazing Grace", most guitar solos you have ever air-played: pentatonic. Entire genres, from blues to country to rock, lean on these five notes.
Try it here: find your key on the detector, look at the seven scale chips, and simply skip the 4th and the 7th while improvising. Ten seconds of theory, a lifetime of safe solos.
Press the black key between F and G. What did you play, F sharp or G flat? The honest answer: both. Same pitch, same string, same frequency, two names. Notes like these are called enharmonic equivalents.
Because scales are spelled like sentences, and every letter wants to appear exactly once. The F# major scale is written F# G# A# B C# D# E#, one of each letter from A to G. If we wrote Gb instead of F#, the same scale would need to reuse letters and reading it would become a puzzle. So the name is chosen to keep the spelling clean, not because the sound changes.
Yes, E# is just F. But inside F# major, the 7th note must be some kind of E, because the letter E has not been used yet. Write F and you suddenly have two F letters in one scale. Music notation chose consistency over familiarity, and honestly, it was right.
The detector compares pitches, not names. Press D# and it will happily match scales that call that note Eb. You never have to think about spelling while playing; the naming only matters when you write music down for someone else to read.
Tools do not make musicians; routines do. Here is a small circuit I actually use. Ten minutes, four steps, no skipping.
Put on any song. Catch three or four notes from the intro and tap them on the detector. Watch the candidates shrink until one key remains. This trains the slowest skill of all: hearing.
Play the seven scale notes up and down, slowly, saying their names out loud. Corny? Completely. It also welds the shapes into your fingers faster than anything else known to science or my music teacher.
Open the progressions, take I V vi IV, and loop it. Keep the rhythm boring on purpose; boring rhythm frees your ears to hear the harmony move.
Solo with your voice or your instrument over the loop, landing every phrase on the root. Two minutes of this daily beats two hours of it monthly. Consistency is the only real music theory.
Everything else on this site is about which notes to play. This lesson is about when. Rhythm is the half of music that scales cannot see, and it is the half your body already understands.
The beat is the steady pulse you nod to. Its speed is the tempo, measured in BPM, beats per minute. 60 BPM is one beat per second, a slow ballad; 120 BPM is a brisk pop song; 180 BPM is punk sweating.
Beats are grouped into small boxes called bars. The time signature tells you how many fit in each box. 4/4 means four beats per bar, and it earned its nickname "common time" honestly: the overwhelming majority of pop, rock, blues and electronic music lives in it. 3/4 is the waltz, one-two-three, one-two-three. 6/8 rolls like a lullaby.
Count 1-2-3-4 along with any rock or pop song and listen to the snare drum: it almost always cracks on 2 and 4. That is the backbeat, and it is the single most recognizable rhythmic convention of the last seventy years. Clap on 2 and 4 and you sound like a musician; clap on 1 and 3 and you sound like a wedding guest.
Open the progressions page, build a loop and press play. Each chord lasts one bar. Count four beats per chord out loud, then try strumming or humming your own rhythm over it. Notes tell you what; bars tell you when.
Two pieces of good news. First: perfect pitch, the ability to name a lone note from silence, is rare, mostly set in early childhood, and completely unnecessary for playing music. Second: relative pitch, the ability to hear distances between notes, is a muscle. Anyone can train it, at any age.
The classic trick for learning intervals is anchoring each one to a song you already know. A perfect fifth is the leap in "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". A perfect fourth opens "Here Comes the Bride". An octave is the first two notes of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". A minor second is the Jaws theme creeping. A major third opens "Oh When the Saints". You do not memorize distances; you remember songs.
The unskippable exercise: sing what you hear. Your voice is the honest mirror of your ear; if you cannot sing it, you have not really heard it. Nobody needs to listen, hum in the shower, that counts.
The ear trainer on the detector page plays three notes from a random key, root first, and asks you to name it. Two minutes a day, chase your streak. The first week feels like guessing. Around week three, something quietly clicks and never unclicks.
A scale is a family of notes that sound good together. Take C major: C D E F G A B. Stay inside those seven notes and almost anything you play will sound "right". That is why finding the scale is the whole point of this site · once you know the family, you can improvise without fear.
The key is the home of a song. When we say a song is "in G major", it means the song's melody and chords are built from the G major scale, and the note G feels like home · the place where phrases want to land and rest.
The root is the note a scale or a chord is built on · its ground floor. In C major the root is C; in a Dm chord the root is D. Starting and ending your phrases on the root makes your solo sound resolved instead of lost.
Take the same seven notes of a major scale, but start from a different one of them · you get a mode. Same ingredients, completely different mood. Start C major from D and you get D Dorian (jazzy minor); start it from A and you get A minor (sad). That is why this site shows seven modes for every key you find: seven moods for free, no new notes to learn.
A chord is several notes played at the same time. The most common kind is the triad: pick a note, skip one, pick, skip one, pick · like C, E, G. Three notes, one sound.
They describe a chord's mood, and the mood comes from the distances between its notes. Major chords sound happy and open (C), minor chords sound sad or thoughtful (Cm), diminished chords sound tense and unstable (C°) · they want to move somewhere else immediately.
A 7th chord is a triad with one more note stacked on top · it adds color: maj7 sounds dreamy, m7 sounds smooth and jazzy, 7 (dominant) sounds bluesy. A sus chord (suspended) replaces the middle note of a triad with its neighbor · sus2 or sus4 · so the chord floats, neither happy nor sad, waiting to resolve.
The chords you can build using only the notes of one scale. Every scale gives you exactly seven of them, one on each note. They are guaranteed to fit together · that is why the site lists them for every key: it is your safe palette for writing or jamming.
A chord progression is chords played one after another · the skeleton of a song. Verse, chorus, everything sits on top of a progression. We write them with roman numerals (I–IV–V) so they work in any key.
They number the scale's seven degrees, so a progression can be described without naming a key. In C major: I = C, ii = Dm, V = G. Uppercase means major, lowercase means minor, the ° sign means diminished. "I–V–vi–IV" in C is C → G → Am → F; the same recipe in G is G → D → Em → C. Same feeling, different key · that is the magic of numerals.
Because a handful of progressions carried most of popular music. I–V–vi–IV alone powers hundreds of hits; ii–V–I is the heart of jazz; the 12-bar blues is I–IV–V rearranged. Learn to hear these few shapes and half of the radio becomes sight-readable.
The same note, higher or lower. A piano has many C's · each one doubles the frequency of the one below. That is why the piano here offers 1 to 3 octaves: same note names, different heights.
The distance between two notes, measured in steps. The smallest one on a piano is a half step (E to F); two half steps make a whole step (C to D). Stack intervals and you get chords; walk them and you get melodies.
